Frequently Asked Questions

OUR MOST ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS CABINET REFINISHING?

Cabinet Refinishing (you might call is Cabinet Painting ) is an affordable way for home owners to get a whole new look in your kitchen while using your existing cabinets.

We coat your frames with the top of the line industrial grade product designed specifically for kitchens and long lasting finishes. We take your doors to our shop, and use our professional spraying system to coat your doors in our state of the art spray booth. If you have or would like crown molding installed, we would spray that as well.

The result is a custom kitchen at a quarter the cost of replacing all the cabinets and doors in your kitchen!

WHAT IS CABINET REFACING?

Cabinet Refacing is great for home owners who have existing cabinet doors that are in poor condition, or who would like a new style of cabinet door. We will paint / refinish your current cabinet boxes but all upgrade you to all new doors!
We resurface your cabinet boxes and frames using our top of the line finishing product (we don’t use the Fermica veneer). We make you brand new doors in the style and color you like! You can choose from our Refacing Catalog to see what we can have made. Want crown molding, new end panels or island panels? We can install and spray those as well!

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE?

If you would like your cabinets refinished / cabinets painted (keep existing doors), the average kitchen take 5 working days.

If you would like your cabinets refaced (replace existing doors), the average kitchen takes 3-5 working days not including shipping of the new doors. *We would confirm your door / drawer style about 2-3 weeks prior to your project start date so we can have them made in time.

WHAT IS THE CURING OR DRY TIME?

Everything we spray will be dry to touch before we leave your home. Our products do not dry sticky or tacky. You can fully use your kitchen when we leave. You will also be left with after care instructions for your painted cabinet doors. They will cure to their maximum strength and hardness in about two weeks, so you just need to be careful what you clean them with until after that period.

DO YOU GUARENTEE YOUR WORK?

yes, we guarantee all of our work, and strive for 100% customer satisfaction. We provide a 3 year warranty. We also refrain from accepting final payment until you are satisfied and have signed off on the job. We provide touch up paint to every homeowner but if anything major happens, just give us a call!

DO YOU UPDGRADE AND INSTALL HARDWARE?

Yes, it is common for home owners to want to add or change their handles and knobs on their cabinet doors. We gladly will install your new hardware, or drill/fill holes to allow proper fitment for your new hardware. The handles/knobs and hardware itself is not included unless otherwise stated on your invoice.

WHAT IS THE COST FOR REFINISHING / REFACING?

Refinishing is typically about 70% less costly then replacing. Refacing is about 50% less than replacing. The cost for your space depends on several factors including size, condition of current cabinets, current finish and type of surface (wood, laminate, veneer, thermafoil).

For general frame of reference the majority of our kitchen projects start around $3,000. This is for an average sized space with no large pantries, islands etc.  Medium sized kitchens range up to $6,000. Large custom kitchens with detailed panels, moldings, trims,  pantries  and appliance panels can be upwards of $10,000.

WILL THIS ADD VALUE TO MY HOME?

Every year, various Realtor groups poll home improvement stores and other Realtors to come up with a list of home improvements that actually add value to your house. Year after year, the top results are the same. Cabinet Refacing is the home improvement job that adds the most value to your house. In fact, you’ll recover 80-90% of your Cabinet Refacing costs in the added value to your house!

QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD BE ASKING WHEN HIRING A CABINET REFINISHER

What Types of Paint / Products Do You Use?

When it comes to paint choice, there are tons of options. Only an experienced contractor will know what works best for your space and cabinet material.

Ask about the types of paint they use and whether the paint holds up to routine cleaning and cooking. For cabinets they should at least use a product that meets the specifications of the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturing Association (KCMA). This is the criteria set forth by cabinet manufactures.

Some kitchens will need a different type of paint based on the type of cabinet material. The cabinet painter will be able to explain why a certain choice is right for your home. If the company recommends something off the shelf from a big box store then you should look for another company. There are options from Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore that are acceptable, but a true refinisher should be using a “cabinet coating” for best adhesion, water resistance, non-yellowing more resistant to chipping and quicker curing time.

Do You Have a Portfolio or Samples I Can Look At?

The best way to decide if a company is worth working with is to look at their past work. Ask for their portfolio or examples of projects they’ve done. Most reputable companies will have a lot of photo’s you can view online. The very best will have samples they can bring to your home upon request.  Photos do not always show the true quality and often do not capture “texture” from brush marks or roughness or unevenness from improper spraying.

Take the time to go through any and all examples they provide. If you like the colors, textures, and finishes they used on other projects, they’ll be the right fit for your renovation.

How Do You Apply Your Paint / Finishes?

High end refinishers know that you can’t brush and roll cabinets to get a factory like finish. There are some excellent finishers with a lot of experience brushing who do an excellent job. However, there is no comparison to a sprayed finish.

If a painter says they use standard paint brushes on cabinet doors, consider working with someone else. Paint brushes almost always leave visible texture along the surface. This ruins the sleek finish and makes the cabinets look “painted”. The goal is for the finish to look original.

Ideally, your painter will use a fine finish paint sprayer. The cabinet doors and drawer faces must get sprayed to leave a smooth finish. The trim and cabinet framing should also get a fine spray finish for the absolute best results.

Who Will Be Working In My Home?

Before signing up, make sure you know who will be working at your home. If the company’s employees will be doing the work, you’ll be fine. But if it’s a third-party contractor the company hires, proceed with caution.

The best refinishing companies only let their employees into clients’ homes. These people get screened for reliability and trustworthiness. If they pass muster, they’re hired on and can be trusted to treat your home with respect.

Do You Have A Contract For Work Promised?

You will want a detailed work order specifying exactly what is going to be completed in your home.

This is the number one regret of clients who have had bad experiences with previous companies. A contract not only guarentees that the work promised will be done, but it brings clarity and esnures you are on the same page with the company.

You’ll want the following things listed: how they apply the product, what products they use, what areas of the cabinets they refinish, what prep process they utilize, general timeline, payment schedule, and any warranties / guarantee of their work.
